This rule is nearly two thousand years old. Its principle: in a formula, no ingredient is there “as an extra”. Each one holds a rank, a function and a proportion.
Emperor君 · jūn
It carries the main action. It defines the formula's target and makes up the largest proportion.
Minister臣 · chén
It strengthens and extends the Emperor. It works on the same axis, but through a different mechanism.
Assistant佐 · zuǒ
It covers the blind spots. It addresses the secondary aspects, or tempers anything the Emperor might overdo.
Envoy使 · shǐ
It harmonises and guides. It directs the action to the right sphere of the body and holds the whole together.

EmperorOrganic Reishi. It carries the action on the Shen, the spirit. It is the mushroom of calm in the pharmacopoeia.
MinisterOrganic Sanghuang. It extends this action on the nervous side, through a different mechanism from Reishi's.
AssistantPeony. It nourishes Liver Blood. In Chinese medicine, a poorly nourished Liver produces irritability and restless nights.
EnvoyBupleurum. It moves Liver Qi and directs the action of the whole formula towards the Liver sphere.
