Description

White Peony Root: the root of inner flexibility

In Chinese tradition, white peony root holds a distinctive place among the great balancing roots. While some botanicals disperse, activate or mobilise, white peony root works differently: it nourishes, preserves, softens and regulates. Historically distinguished from red peony root, which is more closely associated with dispersing the Blood, it has become a key reference when seeking to nourish the Blood, preserve Yin and gently soothe the Liver.

Nourish the Blood and release contraction

White peony root is traditionally used when insufficient support of the Blood and Liver is reflected in tension, stiffness, spasms or cramps. It helps soften what has become contracted, calm excessive internal movement and restore a gentler sense of fluidity throughout the body. This ability to relax without dispersing is one of its most valued characteristics in Chinese medicine.

A major root for women’s comfort

Because it nourishes the Blood and harmonises the Liver, white peony root is traditionally used to support women experiencing irregular cycles, menstrual cramps, abdominal discomfort or increased emotional sensitivity throughout the cycle. Its approach is not strongly corrective, but regulating: it helps the body regain greater continuity, flexibility and inner stability. Modern research has shown particular interest in paeoniflorin, a major compound found in the root, studied in relation to inflammation, immune regulation and vascular protection.
