Poorly managed stress tends to evolve into psychosomatic disorders, depression or burn-out. This progression unfolds in several phases: orthosympathicotonic, serotonergic, hypercortisolemic, all the way to exhaustion.

Stress involves several neurotransmitters (noradrenaline, GABA, glutamate, serotonin), hormones (thyroxine, CRH, cortisol, DHEA, sex hormones, vasopressin, oxytocin), endorphins (dynorphins, exorphins), neuropeptides (Y, Hsp70), methylation, inflammatory cytokines and hippocampal plasticity factors such as BDNF. Medicine offers various highly effective short-term medications, including benzodiazepines, which can unfortunately generate a dependency that is difficult to break.
