Description

Hawthorn Fruit: where traditional indulgence meets renewed lightness

Red, gently tangy and deeply rooted in Chinese tradition, hawthorn fruit holds a distinctive place among the fruits used in traditional herbal practice. In China, hawthorn evokes both the world of medicinal plants and that of popular sweet treats, such as the famous caramelised hawthorn skewers known as tanghulu. With its tangy flavour and invigorating character, it embodies a delicious sense of lightness after periods of excess. Its natural richness in flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, vitamins, fibre and organic acids helps explain the enduring interest it continues to attract today.

Between Chinese tradition and the heritage of the “heart fruit”

In Europe, hawthorn has also long been known for its close association with the heart, to the point of often being called “the heart herb”. European tradition has mainly focused on its flowers and flowering tops, while Chinese medicine has made the fruit, Shan Zha, a great classic for supporting digestion and maintaining harmonious circulation. This meeting of two traditions makes it a particularly valuable ingredient, both an everyday fruit and an ally for inner movement and flow.

Digest, lighten and promote circulation

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, hawthorn fruit is renowned for helping transform stagnation, particularly after rich meals or when digestion feels slower. It is also associated with Blood circulation, making it especially appreciated when seeking greater fluidity and less heaviness in the body. This dual affinity with digestion and circulation is one of its defining qualities: it does more than support the body after meals, contributing more broadly to a renewed feeling of lightness. Some modern findings also echo these traditional uses, particularly in relation to lipid balance, vascular comfort and cardiovascular support.

Essential benefits

Light digestion & post-meal comfort

Hawthorn fruit is traditionally used to support digestion, particularly after rich, heavy meals or foods that are more difficult to metabolise.

Harmonious circulation & bodily fluidity

In Chinese medicine, it is valued for its ability to encourage movement and support smoother circulation when the body feels sluggish or congested.

Cardiovascular comfort & overall balance

Thanks to its natural richness in flavonoids and other antioxidant compounds, hawthorn fruit supports cardiovascular balance and circulatory well-being.
