Notoginseng is a kind of distant cousin of ginseng. Described in one of the works of traditional Chinese medicine as being "more precious than gold", its root (San qi) is classified as a Blood-regulating herb by Chinese medicine.

In Chinese pharmacopoeia, San qi is reputed to calm bleeding, invigorate Blood and transform Stasis. It is traditionally used to stimulate blood circulation and soothe swelling.
