Pi Pa Ye, the lute-shaped leaf
Pi Pa Ye owes its name to a musical instrument: the leaf of the loquat tree has the shape of the pipa lute, broad, elongated, with a short neck. The tree, an evergreen with large leathery leaves, keeps an upside-down calendar: it flowers in autumn and early winter, and its fruits ripen at the end of spring. Remains unearthed from a tomb in Hubei show that it was grown in China more than two thousand years ago; its reference terroir is Sichuan. The leaf, for its part, has stayed in the materia medica: a syrup of honey, fritillary and loquat leaf still ranks among the most widespread Chinese preparations in the world.
Bringing the Lung Qi back down
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the loquat leaf is slightly cool and bitter. A single flavour, and it is enough: bitter brings down. Its two meridians share the same natural direction: the Lung must send the Qi down, the Stomach what it has received. The coolness clears Heat from the Lung, the bitterness brings its Qi back down, and the sticky Phlegm that Heat had thickened dissolves. Li Shizhen gave the definition that has remained classic: “once the Qi descends, the Fire subsides and the Phlegm follows”. Its coolness is light, which makes it less harsh than the great bitter, cold herbs.
The same movement for the Stomach
Applied to the Middle Burner, this movement harmonises the Stomach and brings its Qi back down when it rises the wrong way; here tradition pairs it with bamboo shavings. Aromatic without being drying, it also clears turbid Qi in the Middle. Preparation follows a simple rule: with honey for the Lung, with ginger juice for the Stomach. The underside of the leaf carries a felt of reddish hairs that must be carefully removed: this is the first quality criterion.
