Raw germinated malt, the grain that breaks down grain

Mai Ya reads « cereal sprout », and it is indeed barley. This substance does not exist in nature: it is made. Ripe barley grains are soaked for a few hours, kept moist until the shoot reaches about half a centimetre, then dried. The stopping point is what matters: germination produces the enzymes, amylase above all, that break down starch. A poorly germinated batch is not weak sprouted barley, it is just barley; a good Mai Ya therefore shows the shoot and several fine rootlets at its base. It has no reference growing region, because its quality comes from germination, not from place.

Aiding digestion and supporting the Spleen

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, sprouted barley is sweet and neutral: the most temperate profile there is, with no Heat or Cold to offset. It is associated with the Spleen and the Stomach for what it does with food. Tradition specialises it in grains and starches, rice, wheat, bread, tubers: it is the sprouted grain that breaks down grain. Unlike substances that only break down, it also supports: the Spleen regains its ability to transform, and the Stomach « opens ». Combined with Chinese hawthorn, which takes care of fat and meat, it covers almost everything a meal can leave behind.

Raw or roasted: two uses

In the theory of the five phases, the rising sprout belongs to Wood, the element of the Liver: hence an entry into the Liver, rare among plants used this way, and a gentle relaxing of the Qi that does not disperse. The raw form, this one, keeps its enzymes intact: it is the most active on starch, and the one that best relaxes the Liver. The roasted form, warmer and more aromatic, strengthens the movement of the Qi and the breaking down of accumulations, but strong heat destroys the enzymes. For the same reason, a short cooking time is better than a long boil when the action on starch is what you are after.

Key benefits

Light Digestion & Starches

Traditionally used to help digest grains and starches, sprouted barley contributes to good digestion.

Supported Spleen & Digestive Balance

It supplements and yet keeps things moving: it strengthens the Spleen and opens the Stomach while it breaks down.

Relaxed Liver Qi

By its nature as a sprout, it helps to free the Liver Qi, gently and without dispersing.
