Alpinia oxyphylla seeds, warming to hold
Yi Zhi Ren, the seed of Alpinia oxyphylla, also called Hainan cardamom, literally reads “the kernel that benefits discernment”. Tradition did not understand it that way, however: Li Shizhen links the name to its ability to warm the Spleen. It is a perennial of the ginger family, 1 to 3 m tall, with a white lip streaked with red, growing in damp undergrowth in southern China; Hainan is its reference growing area, and it ranks among the “four great substances of the South”. The fruit is harvested in summer, then dry-roasted to remove the husk and keep the seeds.
Warming the Spleen
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the seed is warm and pungent: pungency warms, opens and sets things in motion, and, like ginger, it has an aromatic warmth. Commentators nevertheless call it “warm and astringent”: it warms and holds at the same time. Warming the Spleen was, according to the texts, its primary function: the Spleen needs warmth to separate the clear from the turbid, and the seed’s aromatic warmth rekindles this fire. Hence the principle of “nourishing the Fire within Earth”, and the habit of the ancients of putting it into formulas that restore the appetite.
Holding below, through the Kidney
It also enters the Kidney, which according to tradition holds the Fluids and Essence below. When Kidney Yang weakens, what should be kept slips away; the seed revives Yang, firms up this guarding function and tightens the passage of water. With lindera root and Chinese yam, it makes up Suo Quan Wan, “the pill that tightens the spring”. Tradition readily pairs it with supplementing plants, for on its own it disperses more than it gathers.
