Ginseng leaves, the cool side of ginseng
Ren Shen Ye simply reads “ginseng leaf”. It is the leaf of Panax ginseng, a perennial of cool, damp broadleaf forests, which adds a whorl of leaves each year: its age can be read from its foliage. It comes from the ginseng regions of north-east China, Jilin first, with the Changbai massif. Picked in autumn, it is dried in the shade, as the sun would carry off its fragrance. A good leaf smells clearly of ginseng and leaves a sweetness on the finish. It is a late entry in the pharmacopoeia: the leaf only gained a place of its own under the Qing.
Cooling and replenishing the Fluids
In traditional Chinese medicine, the leaf is cold, bitter and sweet in taste, whereas the root is slightly warm. The bitter taste clears, the sweet one generates Fluids: together, they cool without drying. The leaf enters the Lung, which distributes the Fluids, and the Stomach, which receives them, the two functions that summer Heat erodes first. Its most characteristic action, which the root lacks entirely, is to clear this Heat, which heats and consumes the Fluids at the same time; its sweetness replenishes what the Heat has carried off. One text sums it up in six characters: clear the Lung, generate Fluids, quench thirst.
The leaf is not the root
Zhao Xuemin, who brought it into the materia medica, laid down the distinction that still defines it: the leaf receives only the “residual Qi” of ginseng. It tonifies the Qi, but weakly and at the surface, where ginseng root tonifies in depth; it is no substitute for it. By its character, it is closer to American ginseng, cool as well. With Mai Dong, it forms the Fluids pair: one nourishes the depths, the other the surface. Tradition readily takes it as a simple infusion.
Key benefits
Qi supported & lightness
According to Chinese tradition, the leaf gently tonifies the Qi, at the surface, without the warmth of the root.
Fluids replenished & Lung moistened
Sweet, it generates Fluids and moistens the Lung, especially when summer consumes them.
Coolness & heat soothed
Cold and bitter, it clears summer Heat and eases sensations of heat.
