Description

A foundational mushroom, between tradition and modern nutrition

Known in China as Hou Tou Gu, Lion’s Mane is also called Hedgehog mushroom and owes its Chinese name to its evocative shape: to the Chinese eye, its silky fruiting body resembles a monkey’s head, while the Western imagination saw a lion’s mane.

Long appreciated in gastronomy, it is also mentioned in traditional practices for its nourishing nature and its affinity with the digestive sphere.

Rather than acting in a one-off way, this mushroom fits into a logic of progressive support: it accompanies the body over time, gently, by helping cultivate a steadier and more comfortable foundation.

What science highlights

Lion’s Mane stands out for its high nutritional density:

  • polysaccharides and widely studied beta-glucans,
  • proteins and amino acids,
  • naturally occurring fibers and minerals,
  • specific compounds (hericenones, erinacines) under investigation for their role in supporting nervous functions and the gut–brain axis.

These studies present it as a functional food that can accompany physiological balance, digestive vitality, and mental clarity when integrated regularly into the diet.

Three axes of digestive and cognitive support

Digestive comfort & assimilation

Traditionally associated with the digestive sphere, Lion’s Mane contributes to more harmonious digestion. By supporting the intestinal environment, it helps promote better nutrient assimilation: an essential foundation for energy and overall well-being.

Mental clarity & presence

When digestion feels more settled, the mind often feels lighter. The studied compounds in Lion’s Mane are now associated with supporting cognitive functions and a sense of clarity and focus, without excessive stimulation.

Overall balance

Rich in natural antioxidants and polysaccharides, this mushroom contributes to the body’s overall balance. It accompanies periods of mental overload or seasonal transitions by supporting the stability of the inner foundation.

Directions for use

Gentle decoction: supporting digestion and mental clarity

Decoction is the most suitable form to fully benefit from the nutritional qualities of Lion’s Mane mushroom. Slow preparation allows for better release of its naturally occurring compounds.

  • Measure 5 to 10 g of dried Lion’s Mane (pieces or slices)
  • Add 1 liter of cold or lukewarm water
  • Bring gently to a boil, then let simmer over low heat for 20 to 30 minutes
  • Strain and consume warm or lukewarm, preferably within the same day

In cooking: a nourishing and traditional approach

Highly valued in Asian cuisine, Lion’s Mane naturally integrates into simmered dishes, where long and gentle cooking helps preserve its nutritional value.

  • Soak a few pieces in 1 liter of lukewarm water for 55 minutes until the mushrooms swell and soften.
  • Discard the soaking water and use the softened mushrooms to prepare your dishes.

In powder form: easy daily integration

Lion’s Mane can also be ground into powder to be easily incorporated into daily meals.

  • Add 1 teaspoon of powder to hot preparations: porridge, soups, cooked dishes
  • Mix well before consumption
