Description
Suan mei tang is a delicious traditional Chinese drink made from dried plums (Wu mei, also known as ume in Japanese).
Very popular in summer, this preparation is composed of five ingredients: dried Chinese plums (Wu mei), mandarin skin (Chen pi), hawthorn fruit (Shan zha), liquorice root (Gan cao) and fragrant olive flowers (Gui hua). In addition to quenching thirst, it strengthens energy, drives away heat and has benefits on digestion.
Usages
Discover the Chinese plum-based beverage in two drink preparations, according to your preference:
As an infusion:
- Infuse the contents of one packet in a large carafe of boiling water for 15 minutes.
- Add sugar or honey according to your taste.
Its naturally sweet and tangy taste makes it an excellent alternative to classic beverages, ideal at any time of day.
As a decoction:
- Add the contents of one packet of Suan Mei Tang to 1 liter of cold water.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for 10 minutes.
- Add sugar or honey according to your taste.
This slow cooking method is preferred as it allows for full extraction of the aromas and active compounds from the plants, particularly plum, licorice, and hawthorn.
Tips: Filter before serving.
Enjoy hot or cold depending on the season. In summer, let cool completely and keep refrigerated for an even more refreshing effect.
